Robin Germany first studied philosophy at Tulane University and then turned her attention to photography, receiving her MFA from the University of North Texas in Denton. Since 1996 she has been on the faculty of the Texas Tech University School of Art. The AP/RC received as an initial gift from the artist over 120 images that range in date from the 1990s to the present.
In her own words, Germany, “makes photographs that inquire into the nature of being human and the humanness of nature.” Since about 2010 she has been exploring the fresh and salt waters of Texas as a border between a human world and worlds of nature. Concerning one series, Surface Tension, the artist notes that, “Beneath the transparent border of water and air, I am confronted with. . . delicate plant life, hidden habitats and crude human incursions. . .of trash and pollution. I observe the water as a parallel system, inextricably intertwined with ours and laden with implications for our future. . . The images reveal juxtapositions between land structures (trees and plants, buildings, houses) and water life which range from bucolic to disturbing.”
Another series, On the Brink, also explores aqueous habitats focusing n their borders with land masses. These images are made with a pinhole camera.
