Gandert (born 1956 in Espanola, NM) lives in Albuquerque and attended and taught at the University of New Mexico. Since the late 1960s he has been photographing and making videos of Indo-Hispanic ritual, social, and daily life in northern New Mexico and along the Rio Grande valley. Gandert and Enrqiue R. Lamadrid collaborated on the 2003 award winning book, Hermanitos Comanchitos: Indo-Hispaño Rituals of Captivity and Redemption. Through photographs and text, the book explores one of the great shared festivals of the Pueblo and Hispaño communities, known as Los Comanches.
The twelve black and white images acquired by the AP/RC sample the breadth of Gandert’s subject matter, including rituals, portraits, village views, landscapes, and daily life in New Mexico.
